1 | Hello and Welcome to the Raya Show

It's my first #1000wordsofsummer and last night while I was panicking about my writing career, I thought, hey why not start a blog.

For this kind of confidence, I channel the wise words of Ancient Greek philosophers - the first people to realise that no one is truly paying attention to anyone else. Apparently, we're a society of narcissists??

I also watched Ziwe's interview recently, so naturally, I fell in love. I imagine she regularly consults the advice of Seneca and the didactic paintings of Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder before pursuing any projects.

I have The School of Life to thank for the many videos that convinced me no one really cares about what I do, even if I don't quite believe it. Because why would random school friends text to ask what I'm doing in Italy, and then just drop off the planet before we start a real conversation? Sneakysneaky TSoL.

If you've made it this far, you must be a really sweet and supportive person. Thank you! 🌸

I started this blog to carve a space for myself - a writer, an emigrant*, a southeast asian of Malay ancestry (Singapore), an ethnic minority, and other aspects of me that overlap, if sometimes unevenly.

It's really important that I write my stories, discoveries, reflections, and my general experience in a space I created. I'll tell you why some other time.

Thank you so much for reading this post!

I hope you laughed and learned, and have a good day out there. 🌸

*I consider myself an emigrant, not an immigrant, to centre my relationship with home.

More on this later.
